Creating canapés using sticks and skewers

When you are creating canapés, one of the very easiest are skewers using various seasonal produce and other products you may have on hand.

At this time of year in New Zealand there is always watermelon and rock melon available. We are making mixed platters in our summer specials menu of watermelon and feta with pink peppercorn dressing and rock melon and prosciutto. These cute skewers make a lovely refreshing platter to enjoy with summer drinks.

Another combination we often serve is pork belly cubes with Vietnamese pineapple salad or a Spanish version with pork belly, chorizo and squid.

One of my favourite things is selecting the perfect stick to fit the style of the canapé and party. Did you know that we get some of our sticks and baby forks sent to us from Singapore - as far as we know we are the only ones offering these particular ones in Wellington?

The little shell sticks are so cute and lend themselves to seafood canapés or island themed parties. The photo here is with a mussel and choritzo arancini

We have made sticks with lucky four leaved clovers for an Irish themed party. Another gorgeous stick we created was one using orchids for a Hawaiian themed party.

Another bonus of these is that most of the canapés are gluten free.

Don't forget to carry a little bucket or bowl around with you to collect the sticks when the canapé has been eaten.
